Research advancement and development play a crucial role in advancing the institution's research enterprise. It involves identifying funding opportunities, assisting faculty in developing competitive research proposals, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and promoting strategic initiatives to enhance the quality and impact of research at the university.
University research administration supports and facilities the research endeavors of faculty and students. It involves managing grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with regulations, providing financial and administrative support, and fostering collaborations both within the university and with external partners to promote successful research outcomes.
Many of the UMN Colleges, Schools, and Departments also coordinate and offer support for the RA and RD activities within their own areas.

The central Corporate and Foundation Engagement team has extensive experience with grant-seeking activities and insider knowledge on many private foundations. We collaborate with collegiate and Unit development teams to assist with the grant-seeking process, from identifying prospective funders, to submitting a grant application, and every step in between. The team supports the grant-seeking process from private foundations for requests over $50,000, including:
conducting research to proactively identify prospective foundation supporters for your program area
providing detailed guidance about the application and funding process
drafting letters of inquiry, and editing/polishing and reviewing draft proposals
assistance with navigating online applications systems, submitting applications, tracking awards, and prompting post-gift reporting/renewals
How does the CFE team support the proposal development process? The team provides support at any point in the process. Four basic models:
The development officer (DO), the faculty member, and central CFE write a proposal collaboratively according to a mutually agreed upon timeline.
The faculty member and central CFE work together to create the proposal according to a mutually agreed upon timeline.
The DO and central CFE collaboratively write the proposal to the donor (or potential donor).
The faculty member drafts the proposal in its entirety; central CFE provides attachments (501c3 letter, board list, etc.) and support submitting the proposal.
