April 18, 2023 - This hour-long discussion session focused on pragmatic skills to support mentoring up, based on curriculum from the NIH-funded Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER). Mentoring up includes proactively shaping mentoring relationships and the work environment. In our day-to-day work, we often have opportunities to positively impact those who work with and around us in subtle, and not-so-subtle ways. We may not be the formal mentors - but we are the research development professionals, the role models and supporters of success. We will discuss mentoring up, then engage in small group, interactive learning experiences to enhance these soft skills. This session was facilitated by Jan Abramson, a certified CIMER facilitator. In her 20+ year career at the University of Utah, she held a variety of roles and worked with a diverse group of researchers, disciplines, and departments.
